The 220/110/20 kV Alba Iulia station represents an important node within the National Energy System (SEN) and is an electrical transformation station with 3 substations at three voltage levels:
- The 220 kV substation has the role of discharging the power from the Gâlceag Hydro Electric Power Plant (CHE) and Șugag CHP, to make the interconnection with the Mintia Thermoelectric Power Plant (CTE) through the 220kV Mintia-Alba Iulia Overhead Electric Line (LEA) and with Section 4, the area of Northern Transylvania, through LEA 220kV Cluj – Florești – Alba Iulia;
- Through the 110 kV Substation, respectively through 10 110kV LEA cells: Bărăbanț 1, 2, Sebeș 1, 2, Turnătorie 1, 2, Aiud, Teiuș, Zlatna 1, 2, electricity is distributed in the Electric Distribution Network area ( RED) for the 110kV stations that supply mainly Alba county and ensure the interconnection with the RED network areas related to the neighboring counties;
- The 20 kV substation is of an indoor type and ensures the distribution of electricity for 50% from the consumption of the municipality of Alba Iulia through cables, respectively 10 20 kV Underground Electric Lines (LES);
The need to renovate the station is due to the age of the equipment, most of it over 40 years old, the non-renovated station being put into operation between 1977 and 1978.
The renovation works in which the ELM Eletromontaj Cluj teams participated took place in the power station both outside, on the site of the entire station and at the relay cabins, as well as inside, in the control building.
